This is a report from: Inspire Labs, Malawi Polytechnic University Design Studio, Malawi shared with Upside Africa on sustainable and affordable solutions for fighting the COVID-19 pandemic in African countries.
The COVID-19 virus can be transmitted from one surface to another by contaminated hands, this in turn facilitates the indirect contact transmission. In support of improving hand hygiene practices recommended by the World Health Organisation, we were inspired to create an affordable Touchless hand sanitizer dispenser nicknamed WWG1. It uses local materials such as wood to make it affordable for use in all public spaces. WWG1 was developed with research assistance from The Malawi Polytechnic Design Studio.
The Touchless Hand Sanitizer Dispenser is a portable device that is designed to mount on walls or any flat surface and used to electronically dispense any sanitizing fluid by sensing an open hand below it. To encourage use, the device can be adapted to the requirements of both young children and the elderly. The Sanitizer dispensing cycle can be adjusted to minimize wait time between users, thereby creating an easy flowing user experience.

The device can be used in all public spaces, including healthcare facilities, where hygiene is critical. Another important use case is that it can be conveniently installed at any point of sale location and any self-service stations such as ATMs, where people must connect with the banking system to get access to pay for essential services. Economies around the world are opening up and giving all people peace of mind at these 2 touch points, will reduce the spread of the Covid-19 virus as we adjust to getting back to life again.
