Strive Masiyiwa: Build Better in the Aftermath of Cyclone Idai

The devastating effects of Cyclone Ida are still felt across Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique.

More volunteers and intervention have directed attention to the affected zones. It’s been a tough and tedious journey to rebuilding.

One of the top interventions to follow is the work by Zimbabwean Entrepreneur and African Leader, Strive Masiyiwa.

Strive Masiyiwa (born 29 January 1961) is a London-based Zimbabwean businessman, entrepreneur, and philanthropist. He is the founder and executive chairman of diversified international Telecommunications, Media and Technology group Econet Wireless.

In this account of the ongoing projects, Strive Masiyiwa shares progress on the BuildBetter volunteers:

I promised to keep you posted on progress in our #Reboot and BuildBetter process after Cyclone Idai smashed into Mozambique, Malawi and my home country of Zimbabwe. Let me today share an update from Pastor Lovemore who leads Team Econet on the ground. He wrote this a couple of days ago:

“One of our hugely impactful works in the Cyclone Zone has been the work of our volunteers under ‘Project Maricho’. We have almost 800 volunteers who have been doing thorough cleaning of homes, removal of debris, reclamation of gulleys, safe disposal of animal carcasses, cleaning of clinics and schools. Our volunteers, some of whom worked with us in the Cholera Zone in Harare, have worked with local community volunteers in this exercise. This work is helping sanitation and hygiene, creating ‘clean zones’ and generating employment and skills transfer. Our interventions are aimed at deep and meaningful impact in this community. We are on #TheNextMile…
